I'm Tim Franks. It was eight days ago that Donald Trump went on his victory lap to Israel and Egypt, declaring

that he'd achieved the deal of the millennium, in fact, of several millennia, and he had

brokered peace in the Middle East. Today, his vice president, J.D. Vance, touched down in Tel Aviv to

try to shore up that deal, the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The reports in the US media say that

officials in the Trump administration are increasingly concerned that the Israeli Prime Minister

of Binim and Netanyahu could be preparing to restart the war in Gaza because in his view,

Hamas is breaching the terms of the ceasefire. Ugo Bershega is our Middle East correspondent and is in Jerusalem.

Hugo, what do you think J.D. Vance specifically is going to try to achieve today?

Well, it's very interesting that the Israeli newspapers today seem to agree that the message that

the Americans have for the Israeli government is that the American

support acts of self-defense by Israeli troops, but that they expect Israel to respect the ceasefire.

And I think, you know, one of the reports said the message that the prime minister has been

given is don't do anything that might risk the second stage of the deal. And obviously,

this is, you know, a ceasefire, fragile ceasefires we've seen in the last few days. That's part of a deal

announced by President Trump. As you say, he was here last week celebrating this deal. But, you know,

it is very fragile. And I think the idea here that the

Americans have, and particularly the vice president in this visit to Israel, is to really pave the

way for those negotiations involving the remaining points of the 20-point plan that has been

announced by President Trump. And the Israelis have been accusing Hamas

of violating the first phase of the deal by delaying the return of those bodies of the deceased
