The US has carried out new strikes on southern Iran overnight, despite hopes of peace talks succeeding over the weekend.

Also today, what a bank holiday weekend. It was the hottest day in May

ever recorded, with London reaching 34.8 degrees. The US has carried out new strikes on southern Iran.

The American military says the actions were taken in self-defense due to what they say

are threats posed by Iranian forces. They say targets included missile launch sites and

Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines. Washington and Tehran indicated that peace talks

had progressed over the weekend, but there's no deal so far.

Yeah, so I mean, obviously these strikes come as a great surprise and disappointment in light of the,

I'd say, highest hopes yet in the prior few days that we would reach significant kind of progress

in terms of those peace talks to then have strikes of any form, whether they're being framed

as defensive or not, kind of clearly lowers the hopes in and around that.

It comes, by the way, at the same time as the Israeli military

began a wave of strikes across Lebanon. Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the country will

intensify their attacks on Hezbollah and large numbers of people have been leaving Beirut.

Of course, that's despite a ceasefire
