Summary

Just when you think this US Open has peaked, it throws up yet more drama. Catherine and Matt discuss Naomi Osaka's defeat and emotional press conference, an extraordinary performance from Emma Raducanu, the way in which Novak Djokovic was tested more than usual by Kei Nishikori, a ruthless and efficient victory for Bianca Andreescu, and five set wins Frances Tiafoe and Jannik Sinner.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

Hi, this is Billie Jean King. This is Mary and Bartoli. I'm Matt's Belander. This is Mary Carillo.

This is Pam Shriver. I'm Stan Ravinka. I'm Lighten Hutt. This is Yannick Noah and you're listening

Well, when we left you yesterday, after some very, very dodgy shout outs, not overseen by David

0:28.1

Law, it had already been the most breathless and exhilarating Grand Slam Day that either I or Matt

0:37.9

could remember. It's possible that David Law with his more exhaustive and long memory might have

0:44.6

been able to set a straight on that, but in terms of me and Matt, it was about as dramatic as it gets

0:52.7

and somehow it found a way to get more dramatic after we stopped recording. When we left you

0:57.8

Naomi Osaka, it wasn't quite cruising, it was a competitive match against 18-year-old Leyla

1:04.5

Fernandez. It continued to be a competitive match, but one that looked like it was going to script.

1:10.5

Naomi Osaka was a set up, a break to the good and serving for the match and barring a few moments

1:19.2

from that point onwards, she somewhat fell apart. Now that is that's a slightly reductive take on

1:26.4

on what happened. Leyla Fernandez was and is extraordinary. I will never understand biomechanically

1:34.4

how she produces the power that she does, but she does it. So there's a lot more to that loss than

1:45.8

just Naomi Osaka being not right, but Matt, Naomi Osaka is not right and we could see that in the

1:55.1

match. It was a very almost as soon as she lost the game to serve for the match, there was a defeat

2:05.6

about her body language, wasn't it, even though she was very much in it at that stage and she was

2:09.2

still playing some very, very good tennis. Somehow mentally it all seemed to go away so, so quickly.

2:17.9

We wondered if she would come to press, she did come to press and there were a lot of arresting

2:26.1

and distressing and saddening quotes in there. Probably the headline one is hearing her say,

2:34.3

I feel like when I win, I don't feel happy, I feel relief and when I lose, I feel very sad

2:41.0

and I don't think that's normal. Then through tears she said she would be taking a break from tennis
