Summary

Quite simply, that was one of the best ever days of Grand Slam tennis. Surely. Catherine and Matt recap Carlos Alcaraz's stunning performance to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas, the way the crowd turned on Tsitsipas, Simona Halep's victory over Elena Rybakina which included an epic tiebreak, a significant step in the career of Dan Evans, the continued reawakening of Angelique Kerber, and the chilled energy of Garbine Muguruza which is producing big results in New York for the first time.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

Well in terms of tennis quality and sporting drama, I think we might have just had one of the

0:27.6

all-time great 24-hour periods on day five of this US Open. If we incorporate a little bit of last

0:35.7

night as well, we would be able to say that more confidently if we had the greater memory bank of David

0:46.1

Law among us. But alas, it is just myself and Matt Roberts because the excitement of the greatest

0:55.7

ever 24-hour period to be confirmed by David's more extensive memory bank has has rather got to

1:03.1

miss the law and I spent all day today speculating on the tennis podcast what's that group about how

1:11.6

pumped law would be for this podcast. It turns out to pumped. He's been struck down by something

1:22.5

possibly too much pumpedness. Yes, it's an affliction. It's an affliction David struggles with

1:32.6

with daily and we wish him well like Dan Evans told us in his post-match victory after his

when he was asked about his next round with Daniel Medvedev. Oh, I need lie down first.

1:53.5

So Dan Evans and David Law and maybe the rest of Birmingham's inhabitants are having a lie down

2:02.0

and it is left to myself and Matt to pick over the bones of am I being hyperbolic, Matt?

2:11.0

One of one of the great 24-hour periods. I don't think you are. That that was really, really

2:18.8

special today. It looked like a blockbuster day on paper didn't it? You know, we had this

2:24.8

stat that it was the first time since they changed the seeds to 32 seeds at slams rather than 16

2:34.2

that none of the top 20 seeds had lost in either round one or round two. Only Jennifer Brady who

2:41.8

pulled out of the tournament wasn't there. This was such a high profile line up and you just

lined up the matches and Simone Hallepp said she was looking over the order of play at breakfast
