Summary

After 29 of the 32 seeds reached round two in the women's singles event, Wednesday saw many of them tumble, including Karolina Pliskova. We try to figure out, yet again, why her recent Grand Slam record is so poor. We also chat about Kiki Mladenovic's loss from 6-1 5-1 up, discuss her colourful comments about the restrictions placed upon her following her contact with Benoit Paire, and analyse Kyle Edmund's mid-match deflation against Novak Djokovic.

Approximate episode time stamps:

0.00 - 15.00 Zverev and Mladenovic

20 minutes - Garcia vs. Pliskova

30 minutes - Novak Djokovic vs. Kyle Edmund

40 minutes - Thursday preview

Hi, this is Mary and Bartoli. I'm Matt's Belander. This is Mary Carillo. I'm San Roenka. I'm like Newt. I'm Andy Murray.

This is Janik Noah and you're listening to the tennis podcast.

Well, it's four minutes to one o'clock in the morning. I'm still in the BBC studios with the vacuum cleaners all around

clearing up after a day's work for most people and night shifts having been and gone for us. We've just had

0:36.1

Cameron Norrie win through in straight sets and I'm now waiting to interview him via a zoom link

0:42.8

with him in New York. It's all a bit weird, isn't it? The fact that this is happening and

Catherine Whittaker has already presented a day's tennis, Famous and Prime. She's a

Matt's in the caravan or also known as the trailer for our American audience. How are you both doing? Catherine?

1:01.0

Yeah, I'm all right. Yeah, when you say it's all a bit weird, I mean, yes, what's

1:10.1

that? I'm just repenting for life really? Life, yes, sure. All encompassing life. It is, it is

1:17.9

weird. Yeah. How you doing, Matt? I'm okay. Thanks David. You mentioned Zoom. It's day three and it

1:25.2

and I finally figured out how to work the main press conference room video. I don't know what to

1:32.4

call it video thing that they have. It isn't Zoom. It's something else and it's taking me absolutely

1:36.7

ages to figure out how it works. But I have now nailed it and I've asked Alexander's very

1:41.4

of a question via it. So we're up and running. Oh, fine. What was it? Talk about going in at the

1:46.4

deep end, Matt. Oh, no. Well, he won. So I figured that it was safe ground. What I asked him is

1:57.3

how he's finding the bubble, basically, because what he said in Australia is that he thought he

2:04.4

improved on his grandstand performance because he took the grand slam less seriously, basically,

2:09.6

and that he was going out for dinner, hanging out with friends, something he'd never done before at

2:13.6

a slam. And I just wondered how he's managing to kind of replicate that relaxed mindset in a bubble

2:20.0

when there's nothing else to do besides think about tennis. Obviously, he started this tournament

2:26.2

pretty well with a couple of wins. And he basically said that he's not made any kind of adjustment
