Summary

He was down two sets to love. He was down a break in the third. He was down match point. And he was down a break in the decider. But Andy Murray still managed to beat Yoshito Nishioka on Tuesday at the US Open in his first Grand Slam singles match since the 2019 Australian Open.

We discuss how he did it, the reason for his slow start, and how he's holding up physically.

We also cover Jo Konta's mood and form after her defeat of compatriot Heather Watson, Serena Williams' opener, an epic between Karen Khachanov and Jannik Sinner, and much more.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

Right okay, day two of the US Open, how on earth did Andy Murray do that, Catherine Whitaker? He's just

1:10.6

one from 464613 down, how has he done that? Somebody explained to me. No messing with the law

1:20.4

tonight, is there a plunge straight in at the deep end? The only question is, isn't it? I mean,

1:25.6

what's going on? Well, I said to Tim Hemen who we had in our prime video studio, I said, Tim,

1:31.6

if you had to attribute that comeback to one thing and one thing only, I think we're on a time

1:37.4

limit, what would it be? And he said, heart. And I think, I mean, obviously that is a word that

1:46.7

covers a broad spectrum of things, all of them are totally embodied by Andy Murray, persistence,

1:56.8

tenacity, dog idness, stubbornness, but absolute heart is what got him through a very bizarre tennis

2:08.8

match today. I mean, I'm sure in the annals of time, we won't remember the weirdness of the match,

2:15.6

that was sort of all fade away and remember the school line and the emotion and whatever

ends up coming in the aftermath. But it was a rocky ride of a tennis match for a long time.
