Summary

A new chapter will be written in one of tennis' most interesting rivalries when Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka face off in Thursday's semi-finals. In this episode we discuss Azarenka's demolition of Elise Mertens, the way we're having to consider her as a real force in the game once again, her different mindset, Serena's problem solving against Tsvetana Pironkova, and the way both players will relish the challenge. On the men's side, Daniil Medvedev beat Andrey Rublev in a match which was memorable for Rublev's banana abuse and Medvedev's sudden fitness struggles at the end of the match.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

We have the match ahead of us probably that I would want to have more than any other in the entire tournament

tournaments and I have to be honest I didn't know at the start of the tournament that it's what I wanted but now I do know it's Serena Williams

0:33.2

against Victoria Azarenka.

0:35.2

For a moment there I thought you were talking about Dominic Team against Alex Demenor which is what's sort of quite literally ahead of us right now

0:42.1

that's about to get underway and not excited about that. Not that that might not be a great match but I thought you were going

0:50.1

a bit big bit early.

0:52.1

So I agree about Azarenka and Serena.

0:58.1

Do you know what I mean there at the start of the tournament was that in your mind as a matchup that you craved?

1:04.1

I can't say it was for me because I really didn't think of that as a possibility but now I'm sitting here and it's going to happen

1:12.1

and it feels like one of the biggest matches in tennis.

1:15.1

No if you dangled it in front of me I would have craved it but I didn't see it dangling there.

1:23.1

We were just talking about Azarenka and the fact that I mean we've just seen have win 616 love over at Leesmertens

1:33.1

a very very good player who beat the Australian Open Champion in the previous round

1:39.1

and I need to do some reprocessing of how I view Victoria as a Renka

1:47.1

because my mind, my tennis brain hasn't had a chance to catch up with what's happening because yes I watched a beat Joe Conte in the Westerners Southern Open.

2:01.1

I think that match and her lost to Venus Williams in Lexington are the only sort of two full tennis matches

2:09.1

of hers that I've watched and as impressive as she was against Conte

2:15.1

I still hadn't erased what happened in Lexington from my mind and I still can't quite compute how that was only three weeks ago

2:23.1

but I need to start doing some quick computing and completely reordering the Azarenka compartments in my brain

2:34.1

because she's playing World Beats in tennis.
