Recently, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Joshua Kaplan wrote a piece for ProPublica about his experience with a man who had infiltrated the right-wing militia movement in this country.

Now, it caught our attention for the obvious reasons.

This insider, a wilderness survival

trainer named John Williams, told Kaplan about the recruiting strategy and the secret training

and marketing operations he had uncovered. But we were particularly taken by the Utah angle

to the story and just the cloak and dagger intrigue and how the story played out.

John Williams had been ready for a while that he might possibly need to run at a moment's notice.

He kept a bag in his closet with everything he would need, which range from three pairs of socks

and some cash to lock picking gear and vitamins to these thumb drives that each held more

than 100 gigabytes of encrypted documents, which he would plan on quickly getting rid of

if he were about to be arrested or killed.

And on April 1st, 2023, he grabbed the bag from his closet and rushed to his car.

He left dirty dishes scattered around his apartment.

You know, you didn't know if armed men were out looking for him.

More frankly, if he would ever feel safe to come home again.

Yeah. to come home again. And he parked his car for the night in the hills outside of Salt Lake City.
