Summary

Tony Overbay, LMFT, dives into an article by Dr. Richard Friedman titled 'Plenty of People Could Quit Therapy Right Now.' Tony reads the article and comments in real-time, talking about the many different reasons people come to therapy, the importance of the therapist/client relationship, and what to do if you don’t feel a connection with your therapist. He discusses why talk therapy works and provides additional personal insights, bringing in his background in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He shares some of the challenges he has with the more popular CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy modality. The discussion revolves around concepts like the potentially harmful effects of prolonged therapy when to consider ending therapy, and the possibility of 'therapy vacations'. Lastly, Tony underlines the importance of having a clear treatment plan, addressing the client’s goals, and reinforcing the idea that progress is made when clients implement what they’ve learned in their day-to-day lives. 00:00 Introduction: The Clickbait Phenomenon 01:13 Welcome to the Virtual Couch: Episode 413 01:36 The Power of Numerology: Understanding 413 02:40 The Magnetic Marriage: A Valentine's Special 03:55 The Art of Clickbait: A Deep Dive 04:55 The Case for Quitting Therapy: A Discussion 08:14 The Role of a Therapist: A Personal Perspective 09:43 Understanding Different Types of Therapists 12:01 The Case for Quitting Therapy: An Article Review 16:07 The Role of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy 19:50 The End Goal of Therapy: Thriving on Your Own 20:48 Understanding Emotions and Interactions 21:27 The Role of Therapy in Emotional Processing 21:36 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: An Overview 22:00 The Power of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy 23:05 Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Its Impact 25:39 The Importance of Trust in Therapy 26:28 The Role of Therapy in Dealing with Trauma 28:01 The Long-Term Benefits of Therapy 28:09 The Challenges of Accessing Therapy 28:20 The Potential Risks of Over-Reliance on Therapy 29:51 The Role of Therapy in Personal Growth 31:16 The Importance of Finding the Right Therapist 38:23 The Role of Medication in Therapy 38:52 The Importance of Self-Reflection in Therapy 41:37 The Benefits of Taking a Break from Therapy 42:35 Final Thoughts on the Role and Impact of Therapy Available NOW: Tony's "Magnetic Marriage Mini-Course" is only $20. https://magneticmarriage.mykajabi.com/magnetic-marriage-mini-course To learn more about Tony's upcoming re-release of the Magnetic Marriage course, his Pathback Recovery course, and more, sign up for his newsletter through the link at https://linktr.ee/virtualcouch Please follow Tony’s newest Instagram account for the Waking Up to Narcissism podcast https://www.instagram.com/wutnpod/ as well as Tony’s account https://www.instagram.com/tonyoverbay_lmft/ Subscribe to Tony's latest podcast, "Waking Up to Narcissism Q&A - Premium Podcast," on the Apple Podcast App. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/waking-up-to-narcissism-q-a/id1667287384 Go to http://tonyoverbay.com/workshop to sign up for Tony's "Magnetize Your Marriage" virtual workshop. So, come on a video on the video on the virtual cast. So last week I clicked on a video on YouTube because of a headline that a basketball player was booed on his home court after the team had paid him, I believe, over $100 million to play for them, and he was scoreless in this particular game.

0:35.4

And yeah, he missed a lot of shots, but I never heard any booing.

0:39.1

So then I watched a couple more times, clearly realizing on the second go-round, that A, who really

0:46.1

cares? Because I had a lot of other things to do. And B, kind of refer back to A. Who really cares?

0:51.4

It really didn't matter. But I was expending my increasingly limited

0:54.8

amount of time on this very earth trying to hear a crowd of people that I didn't know, boo,

1:01.2

a player that I didn't necessarily care about. And then go through it a second time to try and

1:06.4

hear the booze. And even better yet, after not hearing them through the second time of the video,

1:12.5

I decided that I would read far too many comments to find somebody eventually say, hey, I

1:18.1

didn't hear the booing, to which then other people said, yeah, I mean neither. And then finally,

1:22.2

somebody said, if you turn up the volume really loud, then this person thought that you can

1:27.2

maybe hear kind of like a boo

1:29.1

right before the video ends. And this, my fine friends, is clickbait. And welcome to the virtual

1:37.1

couch. This is episode 413. I am your host, Tony Overbay. I'm a licensed marriage and family

1:41.9

therapist. And we're going to talk a little bit more

1:44.2

about how I got click-baited into today's topic, which is talking about therapy. And is there a time to be

1:51.1

done with therapy? When does one quit therapy? But before I even get to that, this is episode

1:57.3

413. And I had a client in earlier today who was talking a lot about the concepts of

2:03.6

angel numbers and astrology and moon phases and do I believe in them and my job is the

2:08.7

therapist is I want to I want to say well tell me more about those and and what do those mean

2:13.0

for you and what is the significance but it did have me just for fun. I googled the numerology

2:19.0

meaning of the number 413. Again, this is episode 413 of the virtual couch. So the number
