Summary

In June 1967, Israeli aircraft, armor, and soldiers launched a massive surprise attack against the Egyptian forces of General Gamal Abdul Nasser, and changed the face of the entire Middle East. When the firing died down, the 19-year-old State of Israel had tripled in size, and brought millions of Palestinian refugees under its military control. Although the result was a rapid victory for Israel, and the near-total destruction of the neighboring Arab military forces, Israel had plunged itself into a swamp of demographic, security, and diplomatic problems in which the country remains mired.

0:17.8

In fact there are so many variables in war that it is impossible to predict an outcome.

0:25.8

In fact I would go so far as to say it is even difficult to predict a range of outcomes

So we can look at war in a similar fashion that it is one of the few things that you

0:59.8

can predict about war is that it is not going to go how you expected it to go.

1:05.3

And while you may kill a bunch of enemy, you are probably going to lose more people

1:12.6

than you wanted to, more of your own people.

1:15.7

While you might mitigate the collateral damage that you cause, you are probably going to

1:23.3

kill more civilians than you wanted to.

1:25.9

When you may achieve some of the tactical and strategic goals that you have set forth,

1:34.3

you are not going to achieve everything that you wanted to and the things that you win.

1:38.1

What you take away from that victory is likely to sow the seeds of future war.

1:49.0

And even the fact of the way you perceive things, the fact that you in your own mind and

1:54.1

in the mind of your people, you might be totally right in the right.

2:01.0

But the popular opinion that others have might not be what you wanted it to be.

2:09.4

And if you lose a war, your confidence is going to be shaken.
