Summary

In over four decades of leadership, I've come to the conclusion that one of the biggest gaps in our leadership training comes down to one essential skill...

Creating safety where everyone around you feels empowered to communicate clearly and honestly.

Without this skill, church teams remain silenced - unable to speak truth and creating the conditions for an environment of frustration, resentment, and judgement.

On today's podcast, I'm joined by my wife Geri, as we explore the first of 8 essential relationship skills that every leader must adopt in order to unleash the God-given voice of our people.

We'll model a powerful skill called "Community Temperature Reading" and talk about how it applies to real life leadership scenarios.

Imagine leading a church where every staff, leader, and volunteer knows how to communicate clearly. Imagine a culture, where everyone feels safe to tell the truth and has the skills needed to do so. Imagine the unity that is possible when every voice is heard.

which is whole Jesus mission in Luke chapter 4. But we have to get free

0:38.6

first so we can set everybody else free around us. And then we get to unleash the God-given voice,

destiny, and power of all the people that we serve. But after 40 years of leading, one of the

biggest gaps in leadership formation and training that we've observed and how to build healthy,

0:55.9

mature community or relationships or teams has to do with this a massive gap in our leadership

formation and or discipleship. And so we were not taught, and we weren't taught how to create safety for everyone on our

teams, for example, so everyone can feel empowered to be whom God's made them to be, so they can

communicate clearly and honestly. We weren't taught skills. I had to love well, especially those

1:24.4

with whom we're serving with in leadership. We weren't taught nuances.

1:28.1

We didn't have it modeled.

1:29.2

We knew nothing about it.

1:30.9

And we weren't trained how to help people actually assert themselves in a mature, healthy,

whole, loving way.

1:38.4

And so we experienced the first 17 years of us in leadership, constant tensions, constant
