Summary

Ep 141. Do you know your top five values? Or even your top three? Often, we think we are making decisions based on our values, but we may be unknowingly making decisions based on our fears. This week, Dr. Molly Burrets, a highly regarded licensed clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Southern California (USC), is breaking down the psychology behind values-based decision-making. If you’re someone who often feels at odds when making decisions, like two parts of your brain are arguing and pulling apart from each other? Dr. Molly expertly explains what is happening on a psychological level and how to break the cycle we often find ourselves in when fear creeps into our decision-making. She breaks down the dynamics of control – why we seek control to gain safety and how this can hinder our ability to attain genuine connection in our relationships. Her insights on the pursuit of safety, with control leading to hypervigilance, were truly one of those moments on the podcast that will stop you in your tracks. Dr. Molly is truly brilliant with unwavering emotional intelligence. She breaks down everything from learning your no’s to why high-achieving women often struggle with connection. This episode is for anyone who has ever had to make a difficult decision and wondered or doubted if they made the right choice.

HERE'S THE JUICE:

  • The life-changing knowledge that things are going to go wrong, why practicing radical acceptance in place of avoidance could change your life

  • Why do we often take control in an attempt to gain safety? Is it possible to experience joy and control simultaneously?

  • How to quiet your mind to notice what is meant to you in life – the phone is constantly ringing, but we have to learn to pick up.

  • Breaking down why our unhealthy coping mechanisms are often what is preventing us from following the path that is meant for us in life

  • The importance of noticing your own body daily and learning how to listen to what it is telling you

  • Tangible language to use when exercising a “no” with both the relationships we want to keep and relationships we want to let go of

  • Why using safe people to practice our “no’s” is the key to setting larger boundaries in life.

Hello, what's the Juice podcast fam. Welcome back to episode 141. And we're back from spring break.

0:10.9

Took a little break from the spring because I'm preparing to put my first album out as a recording artist and songwriter,

0:19.1

which I'm sure you've heard me mention on the podcast by now a few times or so.

0:23.0

And don't worry, the next episode will sort of be an official reveal of that and will feature my co-writer

0:29.0

so that you can hear the story of how we met and how I started writing music and his journey in the world and all the things.

0:37.2

But for this episode to come back and

0:39.9

ease into podcast land, I have a guest that I think all of the amazing listeners in this community

0:46.4

will enjoy. And that is Dr. Molly Burrits. She is a highly regarded licensed clinical psychologist

0:52.4

and professor at the University of Southern California.

0:55.6

And she's coming to us today with an episode about how to identify your core value so that you can

1:04.1

start living your own life, your dream life, not someone else's life, not the life of values

1:09.6

that society tells you is important.

1:12.2

The life where you make decisions based on what truly matters to you unapologetically,

1:18.2

even if those values are not what matters to somebody else.

1:21.7

Now, the pod's going to be a little bit different going forward because the podcast is so

1:25.6

important to me and it's something that I still very much

1:28.4

want to do within the mix of my online sharing and my online ecosystem. But I think the weekly

1:36.2

episodes can be a lot for me and a lot for you guys sometimes. And so what I want to do going

1:41.4

forward is when I find a really special guest or I have a really

1:45.6

important topic to talk about, I'm going to record an episode and I'm going to share it

1:50.1

with you guys. And that means the podcast will probably be popping in about monthly from

1:55.7

here on out so that the episodes are a little bit more sparse. You're going to get about one a month, but they're going to be a higher quality. They're going to be with more heart. They're not going to be to just fill a podcast schedule and have something to post every week. It's going to be guests that I really care about, that I've taken the time to source. And I'm balancing the podcast in the midst of all the other things in life, like my brand organic Olivia, and of course, now my music career.
