My husband and I were both Americans, but we met in Beijing, actually, as college kids.

And we finally got married in 2008 and moved to Shanghai together. And we had three biological children.

And then there's a lot of adoption advocacy in China.

A lot of children were adopted from foster situations.

And so we never thought that we'd adopt.

You know, and if I'm honest, I think deep down in my human nature, I thought, I have three

biological children.

How could I love someone more, you know, than my babies, right?

So anyway, I'm in this group for adoption advocacy, and it was started by a good friend

of mine.

And they ran a nonprofit that did super interesting work.

They basically tried to place children in homes before they were sent back to their home orphanage,

like somewhere in the middle of nowhere, China, because you lose track of the kids once they're sent back to the home orphanage after they have these healing surgeries that only the best hospitals in Shanghai can really take these hard cases for these kids.

And I saw this picture of a little girl.

I immediately started to just tear.

Like it's hard to explain.

Cry, but just tear.

Like my face was just running.

And so we were able to donate to her surgery.

And that gave us an in to how she was doing.

And I thought at that time, man, what if?
