Summary

We still work with the old idea that we should check the messy parts of ourselves at the door of our professional lives. But Jerry Colonna says doing so cuts us off from the source of our creativity. “The result is that our organizations are actually less productive, less imaginative; not just poor workplaces for individuals to be, but poor places for collaboration … and spontaneity and laughter and humor.” Colonna is a former venture capitalist who now coaches CEOs. He says undoing the old model starts with radical self-inquiry and asking ourselves questions like “Who is the person I’ve been all my life?” — and that it’s only after we sort through the material of our personal lives that we can become better leaders. Jerry Colonna is the co-founder and CEO of Reboot, an executive coaching and leadership development firm. He also hosts the “Reboot” podcast and is the author of “Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up.” And if you want to hear Jerry in action, he’s featured in several episodes of Gimlet media’s podcast “StartUp.” This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode “Jerry Colonna — Can You Really Bring Your Whole Self to Work?” Find more at onbeing.org.

I'm Christa Tippett and this is my unedited conversation with the legendary leadership coach

0:27.6

Jerry Klona. There is a shorter produced version of this wherever you found this podcast.

0:34.6

So Jerry, I'll definitely say in this script that you and I know each other. I love to confess that.

0:43.5

Oh, good. And probably that you're my coach. You don't have to say that too.

0:48.8

The book is wonderful though. I just, you know, I just, really, I looked at such an early draft

0:54.6

and I really felt like I was reading something for the first time and so I'm excited for this

1:00.4

to be out in the world. You know, I'll say it to you now. You were incredibly helpful.

1:13.2

Encouraging and even in some of the, as what is it, Annie Lamotte says, the shitty first draft.

1:20.5

You were really helpful there. So I really appreciate that.

1:24.7

The pleasure. I was thinking as I was thinking and as I was looking at you, something I love is that you

1:36.1

begin, you frame the chapters with a series of questions that are kind of raised and probed

1:46.4

in each chapter, which of course, I really appreciate because you know, I think a lot of questions.

1:53.3

And it starts with, you're talking about leadership, you're talking about the ways we make our

2:03.9

living. It's not such an interesting phrase. And it begins with how did my relationship to money

2:10.3

first get formed and how does it influence the way I work as an adult? Thinking about, you know,

2:17.9

the first question I often usually ask, which was informed by these Benedictines, who would pick

2:28.5

up a big theological subject or mystery and begin the discussion by asking people to answer the

2:38.0

question through the story of your life? And the question could be what is prayer, what is God,
