Claire Redmond had worked plenty of murder cases. She was used to the sight of blood to the aftermath of violence, fury and cruelty, but until tonight she had never had to face the

murder of someone she knew personally.

The victims had always been strangers to her, and as shocking as their deaths had sometimes

been, that lack of any personal connection to them had always helped her to remain detached,

dispassionate, able to view the tragedy and horror of violent death as neutrally

as she might view any other crime scene, a tableau of stark facts, of questions that it was her job to find answers to.

Now, as she descended the stairs into Hoban Station staff area, she reminded herself

of the importance of trying to maintain that neutrality when confronted with the scene of Guy Valentine's murder.
