President Trump launched his reelection campaign this week in Florida,

almost exactly four years after he began his improbable road to the presidency

in that bizarre rally inside Trump Tower in New York.

Back then, Trump seemed like a joke. His native is fear mongering.

Just an excuse for his lack of actual policy inside.

And yet four years later, here we are. Trump's obsessions haven't changed one bit.

The fight against immigration is still at the center of his political persona.

And Mexico, my country of origin, is still his villain of choice.

It has been a couple of weeks now since Trump successfully blackmailed the Mexican government

into granting unprecedented concessions on immigration.

He did it, I should add, and this is important by breaking an unwritten rule

of the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States.

He used trade, one part of the agenda, to force action on another part of the agenda,

migration and security, and make no mistake, the bullying worked.

Because Mexico had never before sent thousands of troops to the southern border.
