A mind that never rests.

0:18.5

Thoughts and ideas swirling on a merry-ho-go-round and not feeling as though we are

0:25.3

the conductor of the ride. I can remember feeling this way for years, decades even, and feeling at a

0:33.3

loss because I did not know how to stop them when I wanted to. Sure, an abundance of

0:40.8

creativity and solutions sprang out of my always best-ling mind, but so did a lot of stress,

0:48.0

worry, and rumination. Part of the reason I think that the common misconception about meditation being an activity in which we stop our thoughts is often expressed as truth when we know that that's not the case now is that the idea that does exist when it comes to meditation is the ability to quiet our mind. That is achievable

1:17.2

by learning the skill of meditation. But stopping the mind and quieting the mind are two different

1:25.6

things. We don't want to stop the mind from thinking. As I mentioned just a

1:31.0

1:37.6

Quieting of the mind is like a filter. We're filtering our thoughts and we, the conductor of our mind, are the filter.

1:51.2

We have control of what we choose to think about. And what we know to be unconstructive,

1:57.6

we are able, because we have the strength of our mind, we are the navigator,

2:02.3

we are steering that mind, we can let it go and not engage.

2:07.7

And equally part of quieting the mind is choosing when to engage with thoughts and when

2:14.9

to rest in awareness, to be still without thinking in any given moment.

2:21.8

When we put that lever into our power, we have control over our mind's pace and direction of

2:29.3

travel. However, similar to having expectations versus having intentions, we cannot set a timeline for when we will acquire the ability to quiet the mind.

2:42.4

It doesn't just happen when we first sit down to meditate in the very first day of practice, and we can't be guaranteed that it's going to happen on the 100th day or the 200th day or whatever.

2:53.0

We don't know when it'll happen.

2:55.7

We cannot set that timeline for when we will acquire the ability to do this.

3:00.4

No, no, no, no.

3:01.0

It will happen naturally and in its own time.
