The National Guard is reporting for duty in the nation's capital after President Donald Trump

placed Washington, D.C.'s police force under federal control yesterday. He's invoked a law that

allows him to assume control of the police department for up to 48 hours, but extending this

authority would require congressional notice

or a change to the law. His plans call for the deployment of roughly 800 National Guard troops.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described yesterday on Fox News how he imagines these officers are

going to work alongside local law enforcement. They will be standing right alongside our federal agents like they were in Los Angeles. They're going to be proactive. If you take an action or a shot at them, there will be a consequence. There's no rogue law enforcement going on from the National Guard, but there's also the application of common sense. We're not going to have National Guards that sit in there like this, seeing a crime committed, and not do something about it."

The president says that he's doing this because crime is out of control in D.C.

But the D.C. police statistics tell a very different story, with violent crime dropping 26%

so far this year compared to last, a 30-year low.

This is the first time in the Home Rule Act of 1973's history that a U.S.

president has assumed control of the D.C. police. And Trump has suggested he's looking at

other cities to do the same, like Chicago, L.A., New York, Baltimore, and Oakland, California.
