Ukraine conflict. The important meetings for President Zelensky traveling to the United

States are with the Biden administration and members of Congress. The doubts are everywhere

in Washington, but they're also doubts in London, an important leader from the Distinguished

Magazine Economist, and there may be doubts in Warsaw, even, with incomplete information

about a dispute between Kiev and Warsaw. All of this adds up to, where are we now towards

the end of the campaign called counteroffensive in this calendar year? A third winter of

war for Europe and a third year of war for Ukraine, for Russia, for NATO. To help me sort

this out, I welcome Anatol Leven, the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, who

has a new item at the nation, a new piece at the nation, looking at this before Mr. Zelensky's

visit and acknowledging the same observations from London, from Warsaw, from Washington,

that the counteroffensive will not be successful this year, and what we look forward to is waiting

to be launched the same counteroffensive next year, or is there another path? Anatol

It's being voiced in editorials. But the question of negotiation, this war will end at the

Hello, John. Well, I think you've put your finger on it. The key decision to be made now

by Ukraine, but obviously also by the Biden administration, in terms of supporting Ukraine,

is do the Ukrainians next year repeat what they tried to do this year, which is to launch more

offensive to drive Russia out of the territory it's occupied in Ukraine? Because to put it bluntly,

I mean, unless they do, they're not going to get that territory back, most probably, or certainly not

all of it. Or on the other hand, do they decide and do we advise them to stand on the defensive,
