I'm John Battsu with my colleague, Colonel Jeff McCausen, CBS News, Dickinson College,

Diamond Sixth Leadership and Strategy, the negotiation between Washington and the Kremlin. What we know is that there was meant to be a meeting attended by the

Secretary of State and perhaps Mr. Whitkoff in London. That did not happen, although the meeting,

I believe, went forward. The news came that Mr.

Whitkoff was on his way to Moscow. He might already be there to talk directly to Mr. Putin.

Something to do with movement in the negotiation, but the President of the United States has now

spoken out saying there is a deal, but it's rejected by Zelensky, not Putin, Zelensky.

Jeff, my scorecards are all marked up here. I need your help. The deal involved Crimea. Which way was to Crimea going and who rejected what?

The way the deal seemed to be going was this bilateral negotiation between the United

States and the Russians, really over the heads of the Ukrainians and the Russians then trying

to urge us to impose an agreement upon Ukraine, which is still, I think, in the cards, at

least as far as the Trump administration is concerned.

That particular agreement would have forced the Ukrainians to acknowledge the sovereignty

of Russia over Crimea, which they occupied in 2014.

It probably also forced the Ukrainians to publicly decide that they would not become
