This is CBS Eye on the World. I'm John Bachelor, nuclear power plant in a combat zone.

The story in Ukraine is not only Zaporizha, now under control of the Russian forces,

and at risk. But earlier in the war, Chernobyl, the hot zones of Chernobyl,

the number four reactor that is in a containment casket, forever we can presume,

and the other parts of the plant that must be maintained in some fashion to keep the people

of Ukraine and Belarus, and most of Europe safe, except during the war. I welcome Henry

Sikoski, the executive director of the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center,

who's my guide when it comes to these matters, because I cannot explain to you what the risk is

about a war zone in a nuclear power plant, hot shutdown, cold shutdown, power lines generators.

I do go to what I learned from a new book, Serhi Ploki, the Ukrainian Professor of History

at Harvard University, the Russia, the Russo-Ukrainian War. Professor Ploki reports that on February 24,

some of the invading Russian troops took control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the

exclusion zone with its arch over damage reactor number four, the spent fuel storage facility.
