Good evening from New York. I'm Antonia Hilton in tonight for Chris Hayes. We are on day 35 of Donald

Trump's war in Iran, and we've entered a dangerous new phase. As the U.S. races to find an Air Force

fighter pilot downed in southern Iran. Iranian media shared

photographs of apparent debris on the ground from an American fighter aircraft earlier today.

And a U.S. official confirmed to MS. Now that the downed aircraft was, in fact, an Air Force

F-15E fighter jet, like those seen here. The official also telling MS now that the jet did not crash due to mechanical failure.

Iranian forces shot it down.

And its two crew members ejected before it crashed.

News of the shootdown was broadcast all over Iranian TV with the anchor telling viewers.

They would receive a reward for capturing the service

members alive and turning them over to authorities. That's according to the Associated Press.

Videos on social media showed American refueling aircraft and helicopters flying low and slow

over the region where those pilots went down. Part of a rare and dangerous search and rescue mission here.

A U.S. official tells MS now that at least one Black Hawk helicopter on that mission was

fired on and several crew members were injured.

That helicopter made it back and the operation safely rescued one of the downed F-15 crew members.

The other remains unrecovered. In military terms, duty status and whereabouts unknown.

It is the first known instance of a U.S. aircraft shot down over Iran. And two U.S. officials

say that it came around the same time that a second

Air Force combat jet, an A-10, like you see there, went down in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The lone pilot was safely rescued. The U.S. has publicly offered no details, though, about the cause of

that crash. But one official tells MS now Iran shot that aircraft down too.
