The Environment Agency has declared drought across large areas of England.

Prelonged dry conditions have meant many areas have received barely any rainfall all summer.

Drought is the second of four official dry weather emergency stages,

and eight of the Environment Agency's 14 areas are now in it,

with a further two expected to be announced later this month.

They stretch from Yorkshire to Kent and from Lincolnshire to Cornwall.

The National Drought Group is a body of experts tasked with managing drought conditions,

and they have been told that the dry weather is now threatening England's food security.

The Guardian reports half of the potato crop is expected to fail as it cannot be irrigated,

and even crops that are usually drought tolerant, such as maize, have been failing.

The National Drought Group was told irrigation options are diminishing

with reservoirs being emptied fast, and losses of between 10% and 50%

are expected for crops, including carrots, onions, sugar beet, apples and hops.

Milk production is also down nationally due to a lack of food for cows,

and wildfires are putting large areas of farmland at risk.
