The US midterm elections were supposed to be a washout for the Democrats. That's because

in general midterms are often used as a protest vote against a sitting president. But there

are also some specific reasons why initial predictions were so bleak. Joe Biden has

very low approval ratings and with inflation the highest it's been for decades, most Americans

told pollsters they thought the country was going in the wrong direction.

Yet as the votes came they presented Democrats with a surprise. The elections hadn't been

all that bad. In the Senate with five races yet to be called the results look like this.

The Democrats and the Republicans are neck and neck with 48 seats each, but most projections

suggest the Democrats will retain control. When it comes to the House of Representatives

it looks likely that the Republicans will gain control. But it hasn't proved to be the

route that many were expecting. The Democrats are currently on 176 to the Republicans 203,

but some of the latest votes to come in will be from the largely Democrats supporting West

Coast. So what explains the surprisingly positive showing? The pundits on MSNBC think the Supreme

Court's attack on abortion could have something to do with it.
