In this podcast, we’re going to talk about type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is more a disease of insulin than glucose. When you’re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, they usually use a blood test to measure how much glucose is in your blood. But, the problem is that serious issues occur before you get high blood sugar. This is because these serious issues occur with high insulin.

Issues that occur with high levels of insulin:

 • Retinopathy - retina

 • Neuropathy - nerves

 • Nephropathy - kidney

 • Hypertension

 • Memory loss

 • Visceral fat

about type 1, but type 2 diabetes is more of a disease of insulin than it is of glucose. Now let me explain.

0:57.0

When you're diagnosed with diabetes type 2, they usually use a blood test to measure how much glucose is in your blood.

1:05.5

If it's 126 or greater and tested a couple times, you are a diabetic.

1:11.9

So that's called hyperglycemia. This is how they diagnose diabetes type 2. But here's the problem. Retinopathy, that's damage with the retina in your eye.

1:25.0

Neuropathy, which is the problem with the nerve in your toes and your fingertips.

and it may take 10 to 20 years

2:00.0

before you become a diabetic,

2:02.0

but in the process you're getting damage with the retina, the nerve,

2:06.0

the kidney, the heart, the brain, and you're getting fatter.

2:09.7

So high levels of insulin over a period of time develop a condition called insulin resistance,

2:14.8

which I'm going to talk about, which then lead to high blood sugar.

2:19.2

The pancreas, the little beta cells, make insulin, and they go into the cells, the receptors, and they
