I'm Gail Strav and you're listening to She Explorers.

A couple of weeks ago I hopped in my car and I drove 100 miles to Hanover, New Hampshire.

It's where a northbound Appalachian Trail or AT through hikers cross the border from Vermont heading to Mount Katadin.

It took me a little over two hours to drive that 100 miles and I was meeting up with a through-hiker

who typically hikes that distance in four days or so.

Her name is Grisell Williams.

Three months after finishing the Pacific Crest Trail, she started hiking AT.

Grisell grew up in Miami in Tennessee. As a young girl, she read a memoir called,

As Far as the Eye Can See by David Brill.

The author had a different background than her.

He's white and hiked the 80 in the 70s.
