We are going to talk about variant CJD and BSE.

But before we do that, we need a little background for our audience, which is not our audience today because they've already heard it.

So let's start with the basics. What is a preion disease?

A preion disease as far as unconcerned is a disease in which there is a disease of the brain associated with the deposition of abnormally folded preion protein in the tissue.

And we heard from Stan Prusener that there can be different proteins involved, right?

Well, I think that's the difficulty. That's an expanded description of preion disease.

Because of course the neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's disease, which people may be very much more familiar with than CJD.

They also appear to have rather similar pathological underpinnings and they're associated with the deposition of abnormally folded proteins in the brain, although different proteins.
