Long thought of as a less respected hydrox to SAG's Oreo,

AFRA is proving itself to be one tough cookie in negotiations with Hollywood's

producers. This should be both heartening to actors and discouraging for anyone who's worried about

an actor's strike. You see, instead of caving and making an early deal as many, including

yours truly predicted, AFRWA joined the Screen Actors Guild last week

in holding firm on a key point. They're both demanding that actors grant their permission

before clips of their work may be used online. And that's even before they get to the issue

of how people should be paid for those clips. In a classic labor negotiation, Catch-22, the studios have told SAG and AFRA that the only

way actors can get any control over their clips, or make any cash from them, is by giving up

control. Producers counteractors' objections by saying, A, permission, your clips are already

pirated all over the web.

And two, getting permission from everyone in a clip would be a nightmare.
