This is a CBS I in the world. I'm John Bachelor with my colleague and friend Gregory Coppley

Defense and Foreign Affairs 50 years ago, Summer, 1974, the Turks attacked, the Greeks defended Cyprus as torn

in half.

50 years later, a man named Erdogan has plans as well to tear countries in half.

And I learned from Gregory, the ambition this time, has sympathy in Baghdad.

I don't know that it has sympathy in Damascus,

but it involves the Turkish military crushing or certainly damaging badly two parts of the Kurdish strength, the YPG in

northern Syria and the PKK in northern Iraq. What's the plan, Gregory? Well, Turkey has

certainly taken advantage of its its breakaway from the West in 1974 to assert itself as a regional power and that's been particularly

the case over the past 20 years under first Prime Minister and President Resitaiyev Erdogan.

His move today is to consolidate the Turkish control over that northern 37% of Cyprus which they conquered in that July

1974 invasion and to load more and more Turkish and Palestinian people into that part of Cyprus to make sure

that the Cypriots can't get it back.

Then as you correctly alluded, we published what had been classified material from

Turkey about their plans and agreements with the the Iraqi government to

jointly create a Turkish buffer zone into the Turkish Kurdish territory

and into northern Syria. This means that the Kurdish groups would basically be

suppressed and there would be a new massive

chanicidal war against the Kurds of the YPG and the PKK

the Kurdistan Workers Party group in Northern Iraq.

Ironically, the Bazani tribe of Kurds is working with the Turkish government in this because they want to get power

over the other Kurdish tribes.
