Summary

After spending an incredible seven weeks in Turkey this past summer with Mavi, my husband, and his family, I knew that I had to share my experience with the Naked Beauty community. As a beauty lover, foodie, and Black woman who has married into this culture, Turkey has become like a second home to me and a place that I believe is so often misunderstood. Luckily my two friends, Turkish comedian Lesli Karavil and Black American ex-pat Courtney Shay, agreed to sit down with me and unpack all that comes with living in this country. From exploring the various ways in which women choose to self-present, to embracing stillness as a means of femininity, to finding beauty services as a Black woman in Istanbul, there is so much nuance and uniqueness to unpack in this episode. In fact, you might just have to listen twice!

I just decided take all of the pressure out, just speak to some interesting people that you know that live in Turkey that can give you a perspective and then share your experience. So here I am giving you my experience. Turkey is a place that I have been going to every single year for the past seven years, except for one break during COVID.

0:51.0

I didn't go last year, but every single time I go to Turkey, I am just blown away at what a special place it is and how distinctly different their culture is. Turkey has a very warm and inviting culture around food and hosting and definitely a robust culture around beauty.

1:10.0

Because those that don't know my husband is Turkish and so our son is half Turkish. So umut, my husband, his family all lives in Turkey. So before I dive into beauty, I want to share some fun facts about Turkey, because I think if you are an American listening to this, you know, we don't learn anything about the world.

1:30.0

It's about European history and we learn about American history. We barely even learn about European history, but I certainly didn't learn anything about Turkey in school.

1:39.0

So fun facts about Turkey. And now the pressure is on because my husband has just sat next to me as I'm recording this, who is, you know, a native Turkish person. Umut, you want to say hello to the naked beauty audience.

1:51.0

Hello, hello, this is Brooke Duarte's husband. Yes, and we'll say Merhaba, spit a little Turkish for the listeners.

1:58.0

Chplak Guzallik.

2:10.0

Chplak Guzallik?

2:13.0

Yeah, but as in English, when you say Chplak Guzallik, it might like, oh, it's like an naked beauty, you know, it's like sexy.

2:21.0

Yeah, but how was my accent?

2:23.0

That's acceptable, I think.

2:25.0

Oh gosh, guys, I'm trying to learn Turkish. I'm not actually trying that hard. I was trying.

2:30.0

I was so hard.

2:32.0

I was trying them with that app for another second and a half, but that's good because Mavi and I only speak in Turkish and it's going to be our secret language.

2:43.0

Mavi and I will only be speaking in Turkish. So up to you don't want to learn that will be our secret language.

2:50.0

Well, I can't have my son and has been talking about me behind my back. So that is new motivation for me to learn, but let me just get into these fun facts about Turkey.

2:58.0

So Turkey is a country that is both in Europe and in Asia. So Umut's family, so my family lives on the Asian side.

3:07.0

You take a bridge across the water and you're on the European side.

3:11.0

The Asian side tends to be a little quieter and more residential, more of the action.

3:18.0

Like if you're visiting Istanbul as a tourist, you're probably going to be on the European side. If I'm saying anything incorrect, please correct me.
