Seattle officials say they want to put an end to dangerous driving in town.

Today, the city council discussed implementing a $500

fine for people caught street racing. City attorney Ann Davison told the council,

racing events are often connected to violent crime. This last weekend, a pedestrian was

critically injured, and another person was shot. Last year, a young woman was shot and killed on Capitol

Hill at a street racing event. If passed, the owners of the vehicle could also be fined, even if they

weren't driving the car. Davidson said there would be exceptions for owners of stolen vehicles

and rental car companies. Today's public safety committee was fully supportive of the new law.

Seattle families have braced for a list to come out this month, naming 20 elementary schools that might close,

but Seattle Public Schools won't be releasing that list this summer after all.

In a message to families today, Superintendent Brent Jones says he aims to present the list in September.

He says the new timeline reflects concerns that summer break isn't the ideal time to engage people for input.

The board would then vote on the plan in December before winter break. But families will still get

an update on closures this week. During the school boards meeting tomorrow, Jones will give a
