In the United States, it is often said,

and this is our national commitment,

we are a nation of laws, not of men,

which is to say the rule of law pertains to every single American citizen, period.

That's why it's so important that so much attention has been given yesterday, for example, to day one of the very first criminal trial of a former

president of the United States. In this case, the trial is taking place in

Manhattan and the defendant in this case is former President Donald J. Trump.

At the center of the facts and the allegations in this case

is, no surprise at this point, a sex scandal.

But the issues are far more complicated in legal terms than frankly they are rather

uncomplicated in moral terms. So let's look at this for a moment and understand what

we're talking about.

The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had said even before he was elected that if elected

he would bring charges against former President Trump.

And so there's no big surprise here, but this isn't really the way the rule of law is supposed to act.

You're not supposed to have a prosecutorial authority say that he's going to bring charges.
