0:14.3	In the United States, it is often said,
0:16.5	and this is our national commitment,
0:18.4	we are a nation of laws, not of men,
0:20.6	which is to say the rule of law pertains to every single American citizen, period.
0:27.0	That's why it's so important that so much attention has been given yesterday, for example, to day one of the very first criminal trial of a former
0:34.9	president of the United States. In this case, the trial is taking place in
0:38.6	Manhattan and the defendant in this case is former President Donald J. Trump.
0:44.0	At the center of the facts and the allegations in this case
0:47.6	is, no surprise at this point, a sex scandal.
0:50.8	But the issues are far more complicated in legal terms than frankly they are rather
0:56.0	uncomplicated in moral terms. So let's look at this for a moment and understand what
1:01.0	we're talking about.
1:02.6	The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had said even before he was elected that if elected
1:07.3	he would bring charges against former President Trump.
1:10.4	And so there's no big surprise here, but this isn't really the way the rule of law is supposed to act.
1:15.2	You're not supposed to have a prosecutorial authority say that he's going to bring charges.
1:18.9	We'll figure those out later.
1:20.8	That's basically what has taken place here.
1:23.0	This is not all about politics in notoriously liberal Manhattan, but it is about politics.
