Summary

Today on The Sword and The Trowel, Tom Ascol and Graham Gunden dive into the hotly debated subject of Christian Nationalism. They specifically look at our Baptist heritage regarding engagement in public and political theology. Spoiler: engaging in the public square isn't just for Presbyterians (nor has it been in the past). Listen to the episode to hear them explain more! Welcome to the Sword and Trial podcast.

Sword and Trial is a podcast of founders' ministries and founders exist for the recovery of the

0:06.3

gospel and the reformation of local churches.

I'm Tom Askell.

On today's episode of the Sord and Trial, Graham and I talk about a lot of the conversation

0:16.0

that has been going on on social media, primarily amongst Baptists, but also amongst some broader

0:22.2

Protestant friends as well, about Christian nationalism. And we're not so much concerned to

0:27.8

defend or condemn that idea or the term Christian nationalism, but rather we want to talk about

0:33.8

the specific issues involved. And so what we do is do, we listen to some Baptists from our

0:40.5

heritage. So you'll hear some quotes from Richard Fuller and Richard Furman, as well as John

0:45.8

Gill and Adrian Rogers, who is not that far removed from the contemporary scene, and just try to

0:53.0

think through why it is important for Baptists to

0:56.7

engage in public theology as well as political theology. Baptists have done this and you don't

1:04.0

have to go looking to your Presbyterian friends or other Protestant friends in order to think

1:09.5

about engaging the culture, engaging the political

1:12.2

world because we have a heritage ourselves, and we're grateful for the broader Protestant

1:17.5

heritage that we have. But we need to recover what our forefathers were talking about and weigh

1:24.1

what they said on the basis of the scripture so that we might think more carefully

1:28.8

about the world we live in today. And that's the whole reason that founders started the Institute

1:34.0

of Public Theology two years ago because we are committed to this work. So listen, and if you've

1:41.0

got friends that are interested in this, like this episode, share it with them.
