Summary

Mike and Jay weren't able to get to everything they wanted to cover on Saturday's show, so they decided to do this 'Saturday Spillover' show. In it, they talk about President Trump's escalating battle with Senate Republicans, the largest ever NFL football team national anthem protest, whether Donald Trump actually looked at the eclipse without protective glasses and why it matters, as well as answering some listener mail. Welcome to the politics, guys. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

0:24.4

Okay. I'm Michael Baranowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University. Okay, welcome to our Wednesday politics guy show. You know, normally what we do is we have an interview or we do exclusively listener mail, but there was so much stuff that we wanted to talk about on Sunday that we didn't have a chance to get to,

0:37.6

that, uh, that we wanted to, we wanted to explore some of these stories and maybe get

0:41.7

to a little listen to me. We'll, we'll see about that. But, uh, but anyway, you know,

0:45.9

the first thing I wanted to talk about, Jay, this, on this show was, uh, Donald Trump's,

0:52.5

uh, ongoing battle with, uh, with Congress, actually with his own party in Congress.

0:58.2

You know, I think it's safe to say that there is yet to have been a week in the Trump administration

1:05.1

where President Trump didn't commit some kind of significant tactical error that's going to make it much

1:11.1

harder, harder for him to actually get things done, at least anything that requires somebody

1:16.4

else's assistance, right? And this week, to me, the big error was the shot, well, multiple

1:23.3

errors at the same type, the shots that he took at House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader

1:28.8

Mitch McConnell for not following his suggested legislative strategy of rolling

1:33.3

debts in legislation into the VA bill, because of course Donald Trump is a master legislative

1:39.6

strategist, you know, but then he takes more shots at McConnell for not making an Obamacare repeal

1:45.9

happen. Then he takes some random shots at Republican senators Bob Corker and Jeff Flake.

1:52.0

And then, of course, you know, he ramps up his shrinking base at a rally in Phoenix by essentially

1:58.3

calling any media with the temerity to criticize him an enemy of

2:03.9

the American people. And sorry, I almost forgot. He tweeted that he'd be fine with a government

2:10.9

shutdown if Congress doesn't approve spending for his Mexico border wall. And you remember that.

2:15.7

That's that wall that Mexico is going to somehow

2:18.0

magically pay for. So, Jay, what are your thoughts on these fights that the president's picking?

2:25.3

At least, I mean, okay, I think saying that he's going to war with them is overblown. And we've seen
