Summary

This week, Mike and Jay start things off by talking about the politics of Hurricane Harvey, including the quality of the government's response, how well President Trump personally responded, and the role federal flood insurance plays in disasters like this. Next, it's an update on President Trump's ban on transgender troops in the military. The Guys begin with a discussion the wisdom of Secretary of Defense Mattis's decision to allow transgender troops to stay in the military until a full review has been completed. After that, they talk about the two lawsuits that have been filed against the ban. Finally, Mike and Jay revisit the issue of sanctuary cities, in light of a federal judge barring the enactment of Texas' sanctuary city prohibitions. the fourth largest city in the United States, and surrounding areas.

0:44.2

There are at least 46 deaths related to the storm at this point, and there's been massive displacement of people and property damage. Estimates of total economic costs of the storm are

0:49.9

really all over the map. I've seen ranges anywhere from $40 billion to $190 billion. Now, of course,

0:57.4

weather isn't inherently political, but there are definitely some important political aspects

1:03.7

to discuss here. So, Jay, if it's okay with you, I thought we could start with the government's

1:09.6

emergency response and then President Trump's

1:12.3

personal response. And after that, maybe talk about flood insurance and some issues that have

1:18.1

come up with immigrants actually fearing deportation if they went to shelters or attempted to

1:23.1

receive any sort of storm aid. Sure. That's that sounds, that sounds good, but I think we should also say, of course, obviously our thoughts

1:32.5

are with those affected.

1:34.1

And this is a time when, you know, this can be a moment for national unity to support

1:42.5

the folks affected. And we'd encourage our listeners, just as we always national unity to support the folks affected.

1:44.6

And we'd encourage our listeners, just as we always encourage you to support us.

1:48.7

Maybe this week go support the Red Cross or other organizations offering relief and help to those affected in the Houston area.

1:58.5

Absolutely.

1:59.4

You know, Jay, I wanted to point out to everyone that before

2:02.6

the show started, Jay, now Jay, of course, is our, you know, it's our resident conservative,

2:08.0

and people tend to think of conservative sometimes as cold-hearted, but Jay was the one who said,

2:12.9

hey, we should say something and encourage people to do that. And, you know, so he shows to go, Jay is actually a compassionate conservative and there
