Summary

This week's show starts with Mike and Jay talking about two late-breaking stories: President Trump's pardon of former Maricopa County AZ sheriff Joe Arpaio and the president's memo formalizing the ban on transgender troops which he previewed in late July on Twitter. Neither Mike nor Jay think that the pardon is a good idea, as it sends a message that law enforcement officials can ignore the rule of law, so long as it's a law President Trump disagrees with. The Guys differ on the transgender ban, but they both agree that President Trump should have allowed Secretary of Defense Mattis' review of the effect of transgender troops on military readiness to conclude before any action was taken. Next is a look at the president's new Afghanistan policy. Mike actually likes a lot of what he heard from the president (as does Jay) though he's skeptical on what he views as President Trump's over-reliance on the military and downplaying of diplomacy and nation-building. Finally, in the wake of another defeat for Texas' voter ID law in the federal courts, Mike and Jay talk about vote fraud, the intent of these state ID laws, and what a truly honest voter ID law might look like (hint: not like what Texas came up with). Yeah, well, that's, you know, we have a big action-packed week. I didn't think we were going to.

0:44.6

But let's start with President Trump's pardon of former Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio,

0:53.2

who was convicted of criminal contempt of court for flagrant disregard of a court order to stop detaining people who didn't actually commit a crime, but he thought might be illegal immigrants.

0:56.1

They looked suspicious. Yeah, they looked sort of brown in their skin, and so he didn't like that.

1:02.2

But anyway, the 85-year-old Arpaio has not yet been sentenced, and he won't be obviously now,

1:07.1

and he faced up to six months in prison. So, Jay, what do you make of this very first

1:13.0

presidential pardon from Donald Trump? Well, you know, this is kind of funny because, you know,

1:20.1

again, I didn't even know about it until this morning. You happened to point it out to me of, hey,

1:25.0

guess what happened after we had shut off for Friday?

1:31.0

You know, look, first of all, we'll dispense with the usual, yes, of course, within the president's power to issue this part.

1:39.0

And there's no question about that.

1:42.4

The, to me, it's the why I don't get.

1:47.8

If it's to send a message on immigration, I think there's better messages you could

1:51.8

send.

1:53.8

I'm also a little concerned in that, you know, what Arpaio was convicted of.

2:01.3

You know, lots of times when people are pardoned, there is the idea of, look, they've been charged, convicted, have done some of their time and have learned their lesson.

2:12.6

They're a better person now.

2:14.1

They won't do it again, so forth.

2:17.3
