Trump's Wall: Your Neighbor Erica Heilman Download

Donald Trump promised to build a wall along the border with Mexico but at this point there is little support in Congress to actually fund the construction. And there's been a sharp decline in illegal immigration since Trump took office, even without an actual wall.

Perhaps the reason for the decline is the fear generated by Trump's deportation policy. So this story is an interview with an undocumented farm worker. He talks about why he left home and what it's like working 16 hours a day, and how he's afraid to leave the farm for fear of being deported.

And there's about 12 million other people here who feel the same way.

Welcome to Home of the Brave. I'm Scott Carrier.

Ten days ago, at the end of April, the U.S. Congress approved a $1 trillion budget that included no funding for building a wall along the

0:14.8

U.S. Mexico border. So it looks like Trump's wall is not going to happen.

What is happening though since Trump took office is a dramatic drop in the

0:26.3

number of people coming across the border illegally. Or to be accurate, since Trump

0:31.7

took office there's been a dramatic drop in the number of

0:34.6

apprehensions of people coming across the border illegally. We don't actually know

0:39.7

how many people come across since a lot more make it than get caught and those who do

0:46.2

make it don't exactly report in when they get here. So the Border Patrol estimates

0:52.0

the number based upon apprehensions.

0:55.0

Normally, from January to March, with the favorable weather conditions,

1:00.0

the number of apprehensions increases 50 to 60 percent.

1:05.0

But this year, as Trump took office,

1:08.0

the number of apprehensions actually went down by 67 percent. That's a big drop and I'd guess that the cause of this decline is the

1:18.6

deportations or the stories of the deportations.

1:23.0

Many, if not most, immigrants who come here illegally have family members here already,

1:29.0

and the people who are here are telling the folks back home not to come because nobody feels safe anymore.

1:37.2

The Obama administration deported lots of people, but those people had broken a law. Under Trump, everyone without documentation is a target.

Last week, for example, in northern Utah, a mother was arrested in front of her kids in a grocery store parking lot.

1:55.0

These stories, these actual events, are scaring people, and they're telling people back home,

2:01.0

don't come. Now is not not a good time, but this is just a guess on my part.

2:07.0

I thought it would be good to actually talk to someone who's here illegally.
