Float trips on the Rio Grande are very popular. You're not supposed to get out of your boat on the Mexico side, but there's no one down there to stop you.

Before I left home to drive to the US-Mexico border at Big Bend National Park, two friends told me separately to be careful, as if it's dangerous down there.

And I tried to tell them it's only dangerous if you have brown skin and are walking north across the desert carrying drugs or a baby.

They're border patrol everywhere and pick up trucks and at checkpoints.

And their job is to protect people like me, a white man with an air-conditioned car,

even though I am an habitual trespasser.

If there's a line, I tend to cross it.

So I'm on the US side of the Rio Grande,

inside Big Bend National Park at the Cottonwood Campground.

The other side's only like 25 yards away and I'm going to try to walk across it here.
