Hi, this is Josh Marshall, and this is the Josh Marshall podcast featuring Kate Riga.

0:24.8

A little show note, we want to start with starting next week.

0:28.1

We are rebranding the show, and part of that rebranding, we are going to have a new name for the show.

0:34.2

It's going to be the TPM show with Kate and Josh.

0:36.8

But now, we're going to get the TPM show with Kate and Josh. But now we're going to get

0:38.8

right into some breaking news from last night. This time of year, we have a constant run of

0:44.8

special elections and primaries and so forth. Kate, what happened last night, I guess starting in

0:50.3

Indiana and if there are any other races of consequence, we should discuss.

1:01.6

Yeah. I don't know how it landed with you, but I found the Indiana results to be pretty sobering, disheartening. Basically, there were seven of these state senators who had held firm

1:10.2

against Trump and J.D. Vance's, you know, pressure

1:14.4

campaign to get them to redistrict and said, no, we don't want to do that. You know, that's not the

1:20.1

will of the voters, et cetera. Five of them lost to Trump backed primary opponents. One of them

1:26.5

won and one of them. It's still too close to call.

1:30.9

So, I mean, on the one hand, you have this being a warning, right, to Republicans and all the other

1:40.4

red states that if you resist the gerrymandering pressure, you will be chased out of

1:46.4

your seat. And then on the other hand, it's this dynamic that's been going on since Trump won,

1:54.4

which is with every kind of iteration of the party under Trump, more and more of anyone who could be considered, you know,

2:03.7

kind of a moderate or at least an old school Republican just gets washed out of the party.

2:08.6

So with each election cycle, we're left with a more fascistic, right-wing, kind of extrem extremist party because all of the milder elements are just

2:23.0

being expunged, you know? And so this is another example of it. Not that the Indiana State House

2:29.7

was like a bastion of temperance or anything. But now, you know, these seven people, at least five,

2:38.9

maybe six of them, who had the kind of courage to stand up to Trump and a sense of moderation

...
