It's a great reminder of the horrors of enslavement that this country perpetrated for so many years

and Jim Crow horrors that followed for those who are you unaware of the meaning of Juneteenth.

It was the day back in 1865, the year the war ended, the year Lincoln was assassinated, when

the enslaved African-Americans of Texas learned for the first time that Lincoln had emancipated

them earlier, but they didn't know about it.

So for years, African-American communities and ordinary folks have in private basically

celebrated this the end of enslavement, good article on today's New York Times by a woman

a historian who talked about how as a young person she celebrated it really locally among

folks and she was speculating as to whether or not making it a national holiday will impact

local events and she's calling for it to be both national and a local event for the

black community.

And so it really makes you think, though, just think in your own minds.
