Summary

Benjamin Netanyahu may have coasted into a clear victory in the fifth Israeli election round last week, but for Israel’s closest ally, the United States, the midterms have been startlingly close, with control of both chambers of Congress remaining up in the air as of this morning. And although Democrats have been breathing a sigh of relief after avoiding the sweeping midterm losses that were forecasted, Republicans could still be edging toward a narrow majority in the House of Representatives. This week, Jonathan joins us from DC, to detail his take-aways from a few weeks following the campaign, where he hopped from one key state to another, attended political rallies of former Presidents and even ushered in Shabbat at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.    In Israel, despite the aforementioned win on Netanyahu’s end, the road to forming a right-wing government isn’t exactly a smooth one, with demands from every faction of the bloc and a series of controversial statements from members of the Religious Zionist party. Yonit and Jonathan analyze the potential landmines of the apparent coalition, and the implications of the leftist parties’ downfall.   Plus - which fast food restaurant chain offered a bargain this week that left a bad taste? Even more elections. It's elections, elections, elections. This time in America, we will be talking about it all.

It's unholy. I'm Jonathan Friedland of The Guardian, usually in London, but this time

in Washington, D.C. And I'm Unleut Lefay, up Channel 12, still in Tel Aviv.

So, Jonathan. Unholy, two Jews on the news from Keshe podcast. So Jonathan there in Washington, D.C., results are in,

0:44.2

sort of, sort of. Yeah, I mean, isn't it funny? Because I seem to remember we said if the Israeli

0:49.6

elections won't be clear for weeks, months, who will even know? And actually it was pretty clear pretty quickly,

0:56.2

whereas this time, as you and I speak, which is probably into lunchtime Wednesday for Americans,

1:03.2

so late evening in Israel, the TV anchors are not even able to say who will control the House

1:10.1

or the Senate either. Now, yes, individual races have

1:13.4

been called, but normally by now you know roughly the political complexion of the two houses

1:18.9

of the legislature of the country, and they're both on a knife edge. I mean, most people

1:24.7

here will tell you that Democrats are going to lose control of the

1:28.7

House, that nobody can call the Senate. And I have to, you know, when I say most people here,

1:34.8

keep reminding me of this, because one of the things I say a lot, and I've said it even when I was

1:39.4

here as a correspondent, which was whisper it three decades ago, was the conventional wisdom in Washington is always wrong.

1:47.6

And I said it to one of our interviewees that I was speaking to as I've been traveling around this country

1:52.6

for various Guardian reporting and podcasting work. And I said it to one of them. And I wish I'd said it more,

1:59.2

because once again, it was, and they really were

2:02.4

when I was here, it was like a rule. Whatever all the pundits were saying would almost always turn out

2:07.0

to be wrong. And yet again, they were all wrong, including the parties themselves, because they all

2:11.8

thought it was going to be a massive red wave and the Republicans were just going to wipe out,
