Hi, from CNN. This is Madeline Thompson, with five things you need to know for Wednesday, April 30th.

President Donald Trump held a cabinet meeting today, just hours after the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. economy had its worst quarter since 2022. The president was quick to

deflect responsibility.

You probably saw some numbers today, and I have to start off by saying, that's Biden.

That's not Trump.

CNN's Kevin Liptack says that's not the case.

When you dig into the numbers of this GDP report, the ones that contributed to this negative print are specifically related to Trump's own policies.

There was one that surge of imports as businesses essentially try and make a front run on

the tariffs to avoid those new tariff rates.

That's part of what drove that reading down.

The other was a drop in government spending, which is something that Trump has actually advocated

for through the Doge program, through Elon Musk,

this chainsaw going through the federal government.

Those two factors are part of what drove that negative reading.

At the cabinet meeting, Trump also acknowledged that China's economy has taken a big blow

as the impact of U.S. tariffs are felt there.
