Summary

Mike welcomes a new co-host to the show: political scientist Ryan Teten. (Jay’s not going anywhere – he’s working on a special project for the podcast we hope to unveil sometime this spring.) Next they turn to the tragic school shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee and why it seems so unlikely that this time will be any different when it comes to meaningful gun safety legislation. Following that they consider calls to pause development of AI, the ever growing gap between technological change and government’s response to that change, and whether the future will be the dystopian hellscape some are suggesting or if there might be more optimistic possibilities. 0:45.3	to get started, you could tell listeners a little bit about yourself, your professional
0:49.6	background, your areas that you focused on as a political scientist, that sort of
0:53.4	thing, so they can get a sense of you. For sure, absolutely. Yeah, and it'll add some credibility too. So I'm like,
0:58.7	who the hell is this guy coming in out of nowhere? I, to begin, and I'll go way back just because
1:03.8	some of the things we've discussed are dealing with this state, but I was born in Nebraska.
1:09.5	In fifth grade, we moved to Richmond, Virginia.
1:12.9	At that point, I was at Manchester High School, which is a high school right outside in Midlothian,
1:19.3	Virginia. After high school, went to Clemson University, so down in South Carolina, where I double
1:26.1	majored in political science in English and double minored in Spanish and history.
1:31.0	But bigger than any of that, I met Tanya, my wife.
1:34.7	And that was fantastic. We've been married for 25 years now.
1:38.8	I then went to Vandy and got my PhD in American politics and political theory, specializations in
