The District of Columbia is now under federal control. National Guard troops are being deployed to help secure its streets, and its police department will likewise be under federal control. The move was announced by President Donald Trump, who has invoked the Home Rule Act of 1973, in an action he says is meant to make Washington “safe and beautiful.”
