Good morning, everyone. I'm Kate Baldwin. It's Wednesday, April 8th. Here are the five things you need to know to start your day.

Number one, the ceasefire. President Trump has said now that he has agreed to a two-week pause in the war with Iran,

announcing this just hours before that self-imposed deadline that he set for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or else, Trump had threatened, quote, a whole civilization will die.

But what now? A huge question mark, especially after yesterday also brought fresh strikes on Karg Island. And there were also strikes that continued overnight in Lebanon. Israel declaring

that country is not part of the ceasefire agreement, though Pakistan maintains that Lebanon

is part of the ceasefire agreement. Again, big question mark. And Pakistan is now set to host

talks between the U.S. and Iran in Islamabad Friday. The basis of those talks, apparently a 10-point proposal laid out by Iran, one that effectively

only benefits Iran.

President Trump is not saying that he's agreed to those terms, but he is calling it,

quote, a workable basis on which to negotiate.

As for the straight, Iran's foreign minister says their military

will coordinate the movement of ships through it now, but that also appears to mean Iran

is now in control of it and the U.S. is accepting that for now. A reminder that this war started

over fears of Iran getting a nuclear weapon, but has clearly

now become much less about that and almost entirely about the new weapon that Iran has

found, crippling the global economy by controlling that one narrow and critical waterway.

The president meets today with the Secretary General of NATO, a sit-down that's now all the

more urgent as this

ceasefire sets in, and Trump continues to slam NATO allies for not jumping into this war.

Number two, the call. A conversation across space between the only humans in space. In short,

super cool. The crew of the Artemis 2 Moon mission are on their way home after their successful lunar flyby,

and while on their way, they're killing their time, connecting with colleagues on the International Space Station.
