So when I open TikTok, I typically see someone shooting a day in the life video, a corporate girl who's grabbing her morning coffee on the go.

And the next TikTok, I could be exposed to ducks.

And the next thing you know, trauma story, incredibly painful story of someone going through

a difficult event.

And the next thing you know, I could be seeing a TikTok about the latest Batman movie

that's coming out.

Does it make you wonder, like, who you are that the algorithm is like, she likes day in the life,

ducks, mental health and Batman?

Yes.

This is ABC Technology reporter Ariel Bogle and she's chatting to Grace Chen.

I think it'd be so interesting if someone like analyzed the TikToks I'm exposed to and

see how close it really is to like my personality.

My phone thinks that I am, yeah, boiled down, I'm just a duck lover who enjoys listening

to traumatic stories.

Grace is a first-year psychology student, so she's interested in how we think and feel.

And the popular video app TikTok seems to know that.

As someone who comes from an immigrant background, naturally the algorithm has also picked that up.

So I see a lot of TikToks of other Asian girls who have grown up in an environment that can be quite repressive

at times. So I've seen a lot of story times of people discussing difficult relationship

with parents and stuff like that. And normally it's being discussed in a way that is quite
