Today’s guest is Michelle Chalfant, Author of the book The Adult Chair, Get Unstuck, Claim Your Power and Transform Your Life.
She’s also a therapist and created the Adult Chair Model, where she combines psychology and grounded spirituality to inspire personal transformation.
In this discussion, we explore the metaphor of life stages represented by chairs. Michelle shares her unique perspective on how the child, adolescent, and adult chairs symbolize our developmental journey. She delves into the significance of each stage, the unconscious beliefs formed in childhood and the impact of our childhood development on shaping our adult behaviors. The child chair, she says, lays the foundation or our initial road map; next comes the adolescent chair — the phase where our ego develops survival strategies based on our childhood; and then the adult chair, which ideally represents the stage of a healthy adult, generally starting around age twenty-five when the prefrontal cortex is developed. Living in the adult chair is marked by raised consciousness, awareness of self and others, living in the present moment, feeling emotions, setting boundaries, sharing needs, and taking responsibility for one's actions, choices, and motivations. It's a fascinating discussion!
