The financial times was a name I first heard in my first job right out of college.

I was working for a financial rating startup and an older colleague of mine, an old Salmon Brothers alum, this finance guy named Ed.

He used to walk past me every morning and drop the day's newspaper on my desk.

Ed had taken it upon himself to teach me about finance, and in these copies he had circled the articles he wanted me to read and annotated them.

We became friends, me and Ed, and the financial times, and together those two taught me a lot about global economics and finance and how the world operates.

What I didn't know is that there was a fun section of the financial times, a section that talked about art and music and food and film and wine and travel and style that reflected our world back to us and pushed it forward.

And that explored the people and the pleasure and the ideas that make the money and power meaningful. I learned that a little later.

Flash forward a few years. I was 26 living in London, pursuing a career in journalism, and I just joined the newsroom at my old friend, the financial times.

In those first few years, sometimes I'd sneak upstairs where there was this cool creative team of desk editors and photo editors and designers who were putting together FT Weekend.

They were different from us downstairs lot. They were wearing track suits and oversized sweaters. I remember in the magazine corner there were covers from over the years that were plastered to the walls.

On the bookstask, there were these constantly rotating piles of all the upcoming books I had been dying to read. They were all stacked precariously on tables.

Jan Daly, the arts editor, she was always in a flowing scarf and just kind of just back. She was always just back from lunch with some brilliant playwright.

The editor, Alec Russell, was always kind of running around the floor. He was always effusive and bubbling over with excitement about an upcoming story or some great new writer that week.

And in the corner, our iconic cartoonist, Ingram Pinn, he's now retired. He spent every day painting quietly in his office, and you knew he was done when you heard his hair dryer turn on.

To dry paint on paper. It was a playground. It was a playground of ideas and creativity and big questions.
