Summary

First the Mail on Sunday launched a crude misogynistic attack on Angela Rayner; then Tory MP Neil Parish was caught watching pornography in the House of Commons. What does this say about misogyny in politics - and how should we discuss misogyny and pornography?

We’re joined by Shaista Aziz - Labour councillor and campaigner against male violence against women - and Ivy Maddox from United Sex Workers.

Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to the show. British politics, eh? Where to begin? Where to begin?

0:14.4

This is, I mean, we've got kind of the title is slightly light-hearted,

0:19.6

tractor-pawn. But this is a serious issue. We're talking about, of course, misogyny,

0:24.8

thirteenth politics. We're going to be talking about the sex industry later.

0:29.6

Now, all of this has been kicked off originally, this particular, I suppose, episode,

0:34.9

by just a crude misogynistic attack on Angela Rainer, the deputy leader of the Labour Party,

0:42.2

basically suggesting there was this attempt to fatal attraction, attempt to distract Boris Johnson.

0:48.0

It was a really, by the way, not just a really misogynistic piece in the mail on Sunday,

0:52.6

which is where it appeared last week. Also profoundly classists, suggesting Angela Rainer,

0:58.8

who grew up around the corner for me, is stockpotfully enough, she was says on from the posh part

1:02.0

of the street. But where it said that she, she doesn't have the same talents as Boris Johnson in

1:09.0

the Oxford Union as a debater, and therefore she has to rely on, well, her sexual prowess as a woman,

1:15.2

profoundly classist and misogynistic. And what this did is open up a discussion where

1:22.1

many women in politics and in the media, the kind of media political ecosystem, of course,

1:27.4

are very much intertwined, came, spoke about their own experiences of misogyny

1:36.7

within the political world and within the media industry. And then this escalated where a conservative

1:43.2

MP was firstly not identified, which I'll come on to. But a Tory MP who had watched pornography

1:52.8

in the House of Commons, in front of his colleagues, let's just have a little, just so aware,

1:59.6

just how ludicrous and outrageous this is. This MP was Neil Parrish, and he was interviewed

2:08.0

on GB News about the Tory MP before he'd been identified, which was him. Just take a look at this.

2:15.2

And just very finally, Neil, when we got you on these reports, we know your chief whip is looking

2:20.6

into them from a female minister about another, a conservative from Benchow watching pornography
