Summary

Winter Sports Market, aka WSM, is the only show that resembles what SIA once was.  It has all the brands, all the new products, all the in-house staff, all the reps, and all the dealers.   As far as industry building and culture building events, outside of movie premiers, this is all skiing has.  I went down to SLC to cover the event and detail my trade show experience and along the way I chat with folks like Mike Hattrup, Ted Ligety, Cassie Able, Griffin Post, Jonny Moseley, Alex O'Brien and some other incredible industry legends and insiders.

WSM Show Notes:

4:00: Griffin Post, Cassie Able, Cam Hoffman, Mike Hattrup, and Ted Ligety

21:00: Ski Idaho: With 19 mountains, a ton of snow and no lift lines, why wouldn't you Visit Idaho

Best Day Brewing:  All of the flavor of your favorite IPA or Kolsch, without the alcohol, the calories or sugar.

Insta360 Cameras:  The only action sports cam that matters. Get a free gift with purchase over at the site.

24:00: Tim Petrick, Mike Hattrup, and Jonny Moseley

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

I'm your host Mike Powell, and this week I'm doing a podcast from a trade show.

0:21.7

That's right.

0:22.7

While there are a lot of great regional shows, thanks to Cammy Garrison and the good folks at WWSRA or whatever that acronym is,

0:29.8

the WSM Trade Show is the only show in snow that remotely resembles what the SIA used to be.

0:35.9

Speaking of SIA, they used to be this big trade group that was bigger than the industry

0:40.0

itself.

0:40.6

But what happened to those guys?

0:42.1

What was once the authority on the trade and business is a group that still exists on the

0:46.3

sales and marketing dollars of the industry.

0:48.6

I had the head guy on the show a few years back and listened to that interview.

0:52.0

It didn't seem like the SAA knew who it was back

0:54.8

then and well, who knows what they do and who they are now. I'm a believer that when a respected

1:00.1

brand or property all of a sudden starts sucking, well, things usually start at the top. Look at our

1:05.4

country. Look at the last ski brand I worked for. When you have bad leadership, it doesn't know what

1:10.3

it's doing. Sure, you can bend people's minds for a little bit and leadership, it doesn't know what it's doing. Sure,

1:11.6

you can bend people's minds for a little bit and make them think that you know what you're doing,

1:15.4

but the reality is that the damage an incompetent leader can do to an entity can bring it down

1:20.2

fast and it takes years to recover. Look at our country, we're in the toilet, and we'll be feeling

1:25.5

the realities of this leadership for a long time.
